273 - Rule #1

Deck's medium carbon Titus X
One of the rules of racing (ok, we're going for a Jamboree, but
you know what I mean) is that you should not use anything new
on race day. Why? Simply because new things are untested.

Of course, this does not mean that if your inner tube burst
on your last practice, you can't change it for race day!

But these friends of mine are sooo amped up with this
coming WaCycles Jamboree that they got themselves new
frames :-)

Deck's sin is more forgivable because he just got the carbon
version of his aluminium Titus Racer X. The suspension is the
same, the angles seem the same but with the added bonus of
a lighter bike. His bike now weighs 10.8kg. That is with a full
XTR groupset, Hope hubs/DT Swiss wheelset and carbon
contact points. We were even pleasantly surprised because it
looks like the shock was tuned exactly for this frame. There
was no pedal bob and yet when he bounces up and down
on his bike, the suspension gladly cooperates!

Bal's 16inch titanium On-One 456 Evo
Now, this friend of mine Bal is the one who committed a
mortal sin. He asked me to transfer over all the stuff from
his full carbon Scott Genius into this new Titanium On-One
456 Evo! The only new things that he bought were a Ti
Seatpost, Chris King headset and XTR high mount FD.

So from a carbon full sus to a Ti hardtail ?! AND we did the
transfer yesterday (Friday) ... not sure what's in store for him
tomorrow BUT the funny thing is that according to my
highly accurate heft-o-meter, the complete ti 456 bike with
CK hub/ZTR Arch wheelset/150-130-110 Talas Fox is lighter
than NoLights Louie's carbon Scott Contessa/XTR wheelset/
100mm Fox fork bike ?! Bal's heft-o-meter reading also
came up with similar readings. So I'm definitely not
imagining things.

Anyway, see you guys on Sunday!

  1. Hi Monjie, met your friend at Tampines this morning. I was about to start my rounds he already washing his bike! I remember reading your post about him using a Ti On-One bike but when I see his bike, it was up-side-down being washed so I didn't really recognize it. Seems like a pretty bike, especially with the XTRs!!

We chatted a little. As usual, when I meet someone who is into bike I would ask about a 29er. His take was Giant Composite. I am a little hesitant about carbon because of the many 'sudden breakage" stories I read online. Besides, saving a kilo or two really help that much? Any way, before I get my hand, or feet on a 29er, my faithful GT ava 1.0 will accompany me through the thick and thin of those Malaysian trails.

I hope this Sunday's haze situation won't be too bad at Simpang Renggam. Else there might just be a prison visit instead of prison jamboree! And in another week may be we will meet at Iskandar?

  2. You will definitely feel the difference when you lose a kilo or two. Especially if you lose them on the wheels. You'll be surprised at how fast you can go.

Looks like your jamboree today is ok. PSI looks low.

As for Iskandar, hehehe My goal is just to finish. I have friends who took a nap during the jamboree last year and 1 came around 90+ while the other was 200+. Imagine that? So exhausting that you have to take a nap?!

  3. Wow 90+ even after taking a nap? Impressive result. Even 200+ was very good. I wish I could get 200+ and I would gladly give up the nap for it ....

There was no haze so the prison jamboree went ahead as scheduled. It was simply marvelous! The trails were a good mix of single tracks, long but few uphills, long and very slippery downhills etc. There were no rocky trails, no streams and no dessert. However there was a long stretch of sandy path which was almost impossible to ride on. Most riders had to dismount and push. Rain started around 30 minutes into the race and made everything more slippery, more difficult and thus more dangerous. One lady rider fell half way down a slipper slope. Wasn't serious fall as she was going quite slowly. I recognized her as a power rider who had earlier pedaled almost all the way up a very long slope while many other riders were already pushing their bikes. She was also as good as the stronger riders beside her on level grounds. I think her one weakness is downhill. Another rider I met after the race had also fallen and quite badly so. He was riding a rigid folk for the first time and it started raining! He looked kind of daze and pale. He told me he had to miss next week's jamboree as he needed time to recuperate from the fall! Wish him well!

I got 303 at the end. 35km took me 2 hours 20 minutes. I enjoyed this ride as much as the one by BP Cops and the one at Parit Yaani which was also 35km and almost as muddy!
